What is lurex anyway?

editor's picture

Well I did get some socks for Christmas. Kind of stockingy socks. Pale, thin over the knee socks with flecks of gold lurex in them. Which begs the quesion: where do socks end and stockings begin?

It used to be clearer when stockings needed extra engineering to keep them up but with 'hold ups' that's no longer a definitive quality. You'd think that socks needed a bit more substance to them, socks usually perform more than just a cosmetic function don't they? These particular Christmas socks aren't going to keep any chills at bay but they definitely come labelled 'over the knee socks'. Anyway they must be socks because there's no way my mum would buy me stockings for Christmas. That would be wrong on so many levels I can't even begin to contemplate it. pale, thin over the knee with gold lurex bits

the allure of lurex

Lurex is "a synthetic fibre, onto which an aluminum layer has been vaporised" giving the yarn a metallic appearance, according to wikipedia. It is then woven into miraculous disco garments of considerable lustre. Freddie Mercury recorded a couple of songs as Larry Lurex in 1973. Lurex socks would certainly give a twinkle-toed appearance to any dancer wearing sandals.
